I’ve been to Mariner's Harbor many times in my 57 years. I grew up in a town across the Hudson River, and even waitressed at Mariner’s one year in the early 1970's. The food has changed in all those decades and sometimes it has been great and others just satisfactory. In the last decade, they’ve done a good job when I've been there and the fact that the restaurant is right on the water (the Hudson River)and you can feed the fish your bread scraps and sit out on the deck and watch the boats, has always been a plus.
The meal we had May, (18th or 19th) 2009 was without a doubt the worst meal I've had in a restaurant, except for one other time when I ordered lobster at a different restaurant and it had such bad freezer burn, I couldn't eat it. The salads were 8 or 9 green leaves, a tomato and a bit of dressing. I ordered calamari fritters (expecting chunks of calamari deep fried) and something with the texture of hush puppies, over fried, and near burnt was delivered. They were sent back to the kitchen. The soup came to us with a thick scum on the top, as if it had been sitting under warming lights for several hours and was barely lukewarm. We ordered lobster bisque and a rusty, red soup was delivered that tasted nothing like lobster bisque and a lot like Campbells tomato soup with some other kind of food processor beaten vegetable. I sent it back to the kitchen. The beet salad was very disappointing. Beets were stringy and I believe they were likely dehydrated beets, rehydrated an hour before the meal - chewy and flavorless.
My daughter ordered a filet mignon that had a strip of gristle down the middle. It was mediocre for a filet mignon. The waiter seemed new and perplexed by our complaints but did relay them to the kitchen (as far as we know.) The restaurant was understaffed with two wait staff for tables inside and out. Service seemed slow although I’m sure they were working as fast as they could. We saw other tables leaving food and my daughter heard one woman saying, as she pushed her salad around on her plate with her fork, that her chicken Caesar salad was "Okay, nothing great." The salads looked withered as if they'd sat at room temp for too long before being served.
Despite the calamari and soup costs being removed from our bill at my insistence, the meal was $100. Sincerely, the worst meal I’ve had in decades.
My mother summed it up when she said, "It's the first time I've been to a restaurant where I was negatively anxious about what dish would be brought out to me next." We asked the waiter if the chef had changed since the year before and he confirmed. We typically have not had bad food at this restaurant but this meal was horrible. If you want to go to Mariner's Harbor in Highland, NY, call and ask if they've changed the chef since May, 2009.
